Teaching

The Department of Mathematics offers a two-year M.Sc. Mathematics programme (in both North and South Campuses) and a Ph.D. program in Mathematics. Every year, the Department caters to more than one thousand postgraduate students and research scholars. The M.Sc. curriculum lays a strong foundation in the core areas of higher mathematics in both the pure and applied topics, namely, Field Theory; Complex Analysis; Measure and Integration; Differential Equations; Module Theory; Topology; Functional Analysis; and Fluid Dynamics. A pool of choices in elective courses gives flexibility to the students to opt for the course of his/her choice on the advanced topics in Algebra, Analysis, Topology and various branches of Applied Mathematics.

At the Department of Mathematics, faculty members supplement conventional chalk and board pedagogy with rigorous tutorial sessions, presentations, group discussions and special lectures/seminars. A systematic feedback mechanism helps the department to gauge the effectiveness of its teaching-learning process.

The Department is also involved in syllabus designing, preparing teaching plans and paper setting for the undergraduate courses of Mathematics in more than 50 constituent colleges of University of Delhi.

Research

The Department of Mathematics is committed to exploring new ways of research and contribute to the current understanding of Mathematics through significant findings. The faculty members regularly publish articles in the leading academic journals of their field with high Mathematical Citation Quotient (MCQ). The specialization of the faculty members lies in Algebraic Topology; Functional Analysis; Commutative Algebra; Optimization Theory; Dynamical Systems and Ergodic Theory; Complex Analysis; Partial Differential Equations; Fluid Dynamics; Frame Theory; Algebraic Number Theory; Operator Algebras; Mathematical Modeling; Cryptography; Numerical Analysis; Representation Theory of Lie Groups; Mathematical Programming; General Relativity; Control Theory and Combinatorics.

An IT-enabled Research Scholar Room and a Computer Lab provide a conducive environment for research to Ph.D. scholars.

The faculty members have been granted several minor/ major research projects from funding agencies like UGC, DST-SERB, NBHM and IoE, University of Delhi. The department faculty has collaborators in universities across the world to encourage a vibrant research culture amongst researchers working in different disciplines of Mathematics.  During 2018-23, the faculty members have published more than 350 research articles in Scopus/ Web of Science/ UGC-listed Journals with 82% being SCIE indexed.
